1780s pair of stays I'm building. They are finished except for the lining. Silk weave fashion fabric, 2 linen interior layers, silk ribbon binding, 35/2 linen thread. Boning is a mix of 1/4" spring steel and white oak. Pattern is based off a pair currently displayed in the Dewitt Wallace Museum. Started at a Burnley & Trowbridge workshop. I followed the building process in my blog ( [link] )

Question on binding ribbon: is it silk? where did you get it? do you think it will be think enough to protect your skin from the end of the bones?

I used silk ribbon from WM Booth. It's a pretty thick satin, but I'm already having a couple issues with the metal bones. The wood ones don't shift much and I could stitch through them to keep them still if needed. I've put a couple small, thin leather pieces under the ribbon in a couple trouble spots. The original of these have silk ribbon binding, so I figured I'd experiment.

I'm working on a pair of Elizabethan bodys and the originals have ribbon binding. I'm temped to just use self fabric binding though (time crunch and not going to show anyways). Thank you. maybe I'll order some and replace the binding later.
